Post Book Trailer Reply with quote
I wrote a book, The Eye of Orion.

Here's my book trailer. This version of php won't let me embed the video, so click the link to watch it.

I had text, book cover and music, but nothing else ... no art. So I asked a movie artist if I could borrow some of his sketches. They would fit perfectly with my space opera theme. Fortunately for me, he said yes. I used nine of his illustrations. I had one problem though, none of his work matched the final text in the video. There was only one thing left for me to do: build it myself.

Nobody noticed that there was a diorama in the video, unless they knew me already. See if you can tell what I built!

I took 130 pictures of this diorama. Here are the final images I used in the video. In GIMP, I used oilify, erode and softglow to make them look more like illustrations.

After casting, building and painting the diorama, it became a study in photography. At first, I tried photographing it in very low light conditions. My camera couldn't focus. A flash made it too bright.

Then I used nothing more than my kitchen light. I almost kept this photo, but I knew I could do better.

A flash didn't work, again.

Based on the advice of some professional photographers, I bought a ring flash and a 5-in-1 reflector disc. I laid the reflector disc on top of the diorama, and the ring light on that.

I held the ring light above it and shazam! Just like interior lighting.

Later I lifted the disc off the diorama, so it didn't touch. A Star Wars miniature primered black served as a silhouette.
