In 4th edition Dungeons & Dragons, there are a lot of things that can happen in combat that need to be identified. The most basic is being bloodied. That means the character or monster has lost at least half its hit points. How can the players tell which monster is bloodied though? Lots of groups are trying their own methods, but I think I have the best so far: thin colored squares that you slide under the miniatures.

I found 12"x18" sheets of Funky Foam, made by Crafts Etc, at Hobby Lobby. They're 3mm thick and easy to cut, but most importantly they're 99 cents each! I bought eight sheets.

Cut them into squares. Most will be 1"x1", though some should be for larger figures (2"x2" and maybe 3"x3"). When something happens, simply place the piece under the miniature. Since you cut them into squares and most miniature bases are round, you can see the corners. Funky Foam colors are bright. Store them in a box where everybody can reach them.

Here's a scene of them in use. I've been using these for dozens of encounters and we haven't found any limitations to them yet.

The dragonborn fighter has marked two dire rats, so they have white squares beneath them.



The otyugh is bloodied, so it has a large red square underneath it. And a wererat was the target of the druid's storm spike spell, so it has a green square. (If the wererat doesn't move at least two squares on his turn, it'll take lightning damage.)
