At a young age, I developed a love/hate relationship with Stirges. They're bat/birds that suck blood in D&D. They were one of the first monsters in some dungeon and they ate us alive. We limped out of the dungeon and never went back. I've always wanted to do that to PCs now that I'm the DM! Smile

Reaper released a pack of two stirges. When I went home and opened the blister, I thought they were bad figs. (Reaper normally makes great figs!) Not only are they bad sculpts, but they're not even technically accurate. Stirges have 8 legs not 6, and bodies only 1' long. The Reaper stirges are way too big. And to buy a serious number of them would be expensive. I decided to make my own.

Right off the bat I decided I would avoid the issue of how many legs they have by not showing any. Stirges are Tiny creatures, after all.

I can't sculpt and cast my own figs, so I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a pack of 24 doves for wedding cakes. They're very small, and have no heads or legs. The size is nearly perfect, though I still think they're a bit too big.

At home, I stuck the doves' bodies on thick pins with some super glue. This would hold them up in the air. I positioned them differently: some were flying, some diving, some climbing. I pushed a small ball of putty on the bottom of each pin to act as a base.

Then I used epoxy ribbon (green stuff) to make small cones, and squished them on the ends of the doves' bodies to represent the heads and sharp beaks. Then I pushed some small holes on either side for eyes. I painted them brown, drybrushed them white and washed them with brown ink. Of course I flocked them. (Flock! Get it?!) Matte varnish finished them off.
